The crankshaft is used everywhere that energy and power are transformed into rotational movements, which then drive the engine of the car or other vehicle. Rough and finish grinding of crankshafts in all batch sizes can be carried out on platforms with various dimensions.

The main and pin bearings (cylindrical, concave, convex), thrust bearings as well as flanges and journals can all be ground in a single clamping set-up. Flat surfaces and radii can also be ground. Maximum accuracy and quick cycle times are achieved through oscillation grinding in a single clamping set-up and through the productive machine concept. Pendulum grinding is made more flexible with adjusting axis (WK axis). This axis swivels the grinding spindle, on which narrow grinding wheels are mounted, within the micron range during grinding.

Benefit: Every main and pin bearing can be given its own profile shape – compensating for tapers and without the need to exchange the grinding wheel. For example, ideal dimensional stability and high process reliability are ensured through in-process measurements.

Structure and types of crankshafts

Forged and cast iron crankshafts consist of mainly three different components; main bearings, pin bearings and crankshaft webs that connect the main and pin bearings. Main bearings define the axis of rotation while pin bearings convert energy into rotational movements.

Crankshafts are also categorized according to the number of cylinders they have – anywhere from 1 to 12 and sometimes even 14 or 18. Crankshafts can range in size from just a few centimeters long (for small engines) up to 15 meters long (mostly for use in marine diesel engines.)
