Interview with Joachim Himmelsbach, Managing Director of Erwin Junker Maschinenfabrik GmbH

When Engineering Meets Future Technologies

Industrial manufacturing is undergoing profound changes worldwide. New technologies, geopolitical shifts, and increasing demand for efficiency and precision require companies to be highly adaptable. Erwin Junker Maschinenfabrik GmbH, headquartered in Nordrach, Germany, addresses these challenges through technological specialization, an international presence, and a clear focus on customized customer solutions.

For more than six decades, the Junker Group has been developing high-precision grinding technologies for a wide range of industries—from automotive manufacturing to humanoid robotics and data centers. Its greatest strength lies in its flexibility. Rather than offering standardized products, the company develops customized solutions tailored to each customer's specific requirements. “We do not want to sell a customer a machine; we want to provide a solution that precisely meets their requirements,” explains Managing Director Joachim Himmelsbach.

Tailor-Made Solutions for Complex Requirements

The foundation of this approach is a broad technological portfolio. Junker is internationally recognized especially for its CBN high-speed grinding technology. This technology enables highly precise machining of large production volumes within extremely short cycle times, while maintaining accuracy in the micrometer range. It is precisely this level of precision that makes the company’s machines indispensable for many future-oriented industries.

New Markets Driving Growth

For many years, the automotive industry was JUNKER’s most important market. However, the company responded early to changes in the sector and successfully expanded into new business areas.
Today, humanoid robots represent one of the company’s most dynamic growth markets. JUNKER machines are used in the production of highly precise drive components for robotic systems. The growing demand for backup power solutions in international data centers also creates new opportunities. Large engines used for these applications require crankshafts, camshafts, and transmission components to be ground with the utmost accuracy—an area where JUNKER’s grinding technologies excel. In addition, the company develops solutions for applications in the aerospace industry.

Wherever maximum precision, process reliability, and efficiency are required, demand for specialized grinding technologies continues to grow. Automation has played a central role at JUNKER for many years. The company’s machines manufacture components at extremely short intervals and are therefore closely integrated with automated production processes. To support this, JUNKER operates its own business unit dedicated to automation solutions for both its machines and entire production lines. Artificial intelligence is also becoming increasingly important. JUNKER already uses initial AI applications in software and service operations, for example to accelerate fault analysis and optimize workflows.

International Structure Ensures Competitiveness

With 1,100 people employees worldwide, the JUNKER Group generates annual revenue of between €170 million and €190 million. In addition to its headquarters in Nordrach, the company maintains an international network of subsidiaries and production facilities. One of its key strategic decisions was made in the 1990s, when company founder Erwin Junker integrated production sites in the Czech Republic into the group. To this day, many machines are manufactured and pre-assembled there. This international structure plays a major role in safeguarding the company’s long-term competitiveness. At the same time, JUNKER remains firmly committed to the principle of “Engineering in Germany.” Decades of experience, technical expertise, and highly skilled employees form the basis of the exceptional quality of its products.

Steady Growth with a Clear Vision for the Future

Despite the challenging economic environment in Europe, the JUNKER Group remains optimistic about the future. The company continues to see strong investment activity, particularly outside Europe. Over the coming years, JUNKER intends to focus on sustainable growth and technological advancement. “We are not planning dramatic growth leaps; instead, we want to continue growing through small, stable steps,” says Joachim Himmelsbach. At the same time, the group aims to continue differentiating itself from international competitors through customized solutions and the highest levels of precision. Customer proximity and flexibility remain central to this strategy. Rather than relying on standardized machines, JUNKER continues to develop customized concepts for a wide variety of requirements and industries. This solution-oriented approach has been a key driver of the company’s success for decades and will remain the foundation of its business strategy going forward. Joachim Himmelsbach summarizes the group’s vision in a single sentence: “Evolving technology. Connecting solutions. Inspiring precision.”
